That is the fairest path because it preserves the value of a difficult, high-challenge voice while making clear that the forum is not obliged to absorb unlimited contempt, repetition, topic capture, or personal accusation.
1. What the situation is
The meta thread begins with Gen making the strongest case against simple expulsion: the forum should ask not only “who is difficult?” but what relational pattern keeps recurring; difficult voices can deepen the “basin” if the group can metabolize them. That is a real point. A forum devoted to civilizational renewal should not ban merely because someone is abrasive, intense, heterodox, or unwilling to conform.
But the thread also shows the counterpoint. Robert names a scaling problem: if one person has a lot to say and insists on saying it everywhere, they may need a bounded “area,” because the whole forum cannot run that way without defeating its purpose. That is the right direction, but not sufficient by itself.
2. Why “just stay with the trouble” is no longer enough
The linked “Exploring consciousness” thread shows conduct that crosses the forum’s own guidelines. The guidelines ask participants to treat others with respect, avoid abusive or derogatory language, respect boundaries, listen to others, avoid personal attacks, stay on topic, and be concise. Some of Geoff’s philosophical questions are legitimate. For example, pressing for a stable definition of consciousness, asking whether consciousness is binary or gradual, and challenging whether “non-individuated consciousness” has a coherent meaning are all valid lines of inquiry. The problem is that the pressure is repeatedly packaged with contempt, mind-reading, accusation, and declarations that others have lost the argument or are not thinking for themselves. Also, the problem is not Geoff alone. Justin’s “slap in the face” and later face-to-face “educate you” language is also unacceptable and should be moderated. Post a steward note saying the pause is not about suppressing a view, but about restoring conditions for inquiry. The note should name the specific pattern: repeated personal accusations, contemptuous language, topic capture, and failure to maintain boundaries.
Do not debate the metaphysics in the moderation note. Moderation must not adjudicate whether 2PC, panpsychism, UTOK, Wilber, or any other framework is correct.
B. Private steward message to Geoff
Send Geoff a clear message with examples and a choice:
He is welcome to continue participating if he agrees to the following conditions for, say, 30 days:
- No personal accusations such as “bad faith,” “lying,” “you do not care about truth,” “you are detached from reality,” “you have no shame,” unless handled through moderators with evidence.
- No contemptuous global judgments about the forum or participants.
- No repeated claims that others have lost an argument; instead, state the unresolved crux.
- No accusations of AI use without evidence.
- 2PC / New Epistemic Deal / consciousness-first metaphysics should stay in a designated thread or category unless another participant explicitly invites it elsewhere.
- Reply discipline: answer one live question at a time, steelman before rebuttal, and state what evidence or argument would change your mind.
- Volume discipline: use slow mode or a daily reply limit if needed.
Make the consequence explicit: violation means a time-limited suspension, not more debate about whether the rule itself is postmodern, anti-truth, or anti-philosophy.
C. Warning to Justin and others

4. Why not simply ban?

But based only on the visible thread, the better first public governance move is a final structured boundary. That gives Geoff a real chance to demonstrate whether he can participate under shared rules. It also tests Gen’s oyster/kalyana-mitra argument in a way that is not naïve: the forum can attempt metabolization, but only with a shell.
If he refuses the agreement or treats the agreement itself as evidence that the forum hates truth, then suspension is not anti-intellectual. It is stewardship.
5. Why not simply ring-fence him?
Ring-fencing is necessary but insufficient.
Justin and Robert both propose something like a dedicated category or special channel. (Second Renaissance Forum) That would help with topic capture. But it does not solve the conduct issue. A dedicated Geoff/2PC/consciousness space where insults, accusations, and contempt are normalized would still damage the forum, especially if newcomers encounter it as an official 2R research space.
So the formula should be:
Containment + conduct norms + escalation path.
Not containment alone.
6. The principle the stewards should establish
The forum should explicitly distinguish four things:
- Strong critique — welcome.
- Abrasive but bounded intellectual style — tolerable in designated contexts.
- Persistent contempt and personal accusation — not acceptable.
- Topic capture / theory capture — structurally contained, not morally condemned.
This protects both sides of the forum’s identity: truth-seeking and pluralism, rigor and community, openness and boundaries.
7. Concrete recommendation
The stewards should post something like this, in substance:
We are pausing the current high-conflict threads because the issue is no longer only the content of the disagreement. The forum welcomes strong critique, heterodox theories, and rigorous adversarial inquiry. However, repeated personal accusations, contemptuous language, claims about others’ motives, and topic capture are not compatible with the conditions for collective inquiry.
We will create a more structured space for high-rigor debate on consciousness, 2PC, and related frameworks. Participation there will require specific norms: one claim at a time, definitions, steelmanning, evidence or warrant labels, no psychologizing, no accusations of bad faith in-thread, and moderator summaries.
Geoff is welcome to continue if he agrees to these norms. If not, or if the pattern continues, we will suspend his posting privileges for a defined period. We are also asking others to stop retaliatory contempt or physical-threat-adjacent language. The standard applies to everyone.
That is the right balance: firm, non-punitive, non-ideological, and operational.
