Sri Aurobindo on the evolution of human consciousness

The latest issue of Seeds of a Second Renaissance introduces the key ideas of Sri Aurobindo:

Sri Aurobindo: the radical Indian nationalist become mystic and spiritual teacher, who pioneered a vision and practice for global spiritual evolution. Writing in the early 20th century, Aurobindo set the stage for contemporary frameworks of inner growth and cultural evolution such as Ken Wilber’s Integral Theory, and lays a blueprint for engaged spirituality - participatory transformation of worldly life through deep inner realisation.

Some prompts for discussion:

  • Can individual practice and inner transformation really catalyse a collective cultural evolution?
  • If so, how do we dedicate time and energy to it whilst remaining engaged in the world and current affairs?
  • What experiences do you have of spiritual practice and/or inner work which speak to these ideas about the evolution of human consciousness from Aurobindo?

One of the participants in my local spiritual group lived and worked as an educator for years in Auroville. It’s interesting to hear her perspectives on that experience. The way our group works, is there is a set of readings, then people comment as they see fit. This person tends to support generally elevated notions of spiritual practice and meaning making (let’s call it Kegan level 5+) and is a bit impatient with group members with more middling level, less developed sorts of practices. In any case, she always to leads the group awareness to a more expansive place.

Interesting Robert. I did a presentation on Auroville to the research group a while back based on Better to Have Gone: Love, Death, and the Quest for Utopia in Auroville. Can’t recommend that book enough - absolutely fascinating.
