From Effective Altruism to Pragmatic Utopianism & Second Renaissance (aka integral/wise altruism)

Here’s a rough diagram (based on a version first draft with Theo Cox back in 2020/2021)

Why pragmatic utopianism is IMO a slightly better analogy with EA than e.g. integral altruism

:construction:

Roughly, because integral is what replaces rationality i.e. it is the analogy for the underlying philosophy.

What replaces effectiveness is pragmatism (or wisdom).

what replaces altruism is “utopianism” aka paradigm change focus.

I liked what @JonahW was presenting about this on the Research call today (4/25). In particular, the Vervaeke-inspired diagram contrasting phronesis and sophia seemed spot on. I’m reading McGilchrist at the moment, and from that, it seems pretty clear that phronsis favors right-brain processing and sophia favors left-brain processing (more abstract, more formal). Vervaeke’s proposed synthesis borrows the Greek term sophrosyne (balance), and that’s generally something I would support. I’m certainly not anti-analytical, but all analysis all the time generally lies at the root of many current problems. Effective Altruism is too left-brained for my taste, and any sort of long-termism through mathematical projection can generally benefit from richer contextualization.
