The impasse I reached with Lene’s movement is I could not figure out how to use her categories to transcend the particular geography, politics, and social circumstances of Scandinavia. I realized that to plant something in 21st century Seattle comparable to “bildung” would require going theoretically “naked” so to speak and letting local ideas spring up from local ground. Me hanging out in a global forum like Second Renaissance is in many ways a hyper-local move for me, because Seattle is a culturally globalized place. But the local spiritual and emotional center of gravity is its own thing.
